| Mother's Day gift |
While struggling with some health problems in the last year, I decided to search the scriptures for what God says about healing. I found this amazing scripture I don't remember ever reading before that brought me so much comfort, as well as challenged me! God's word tends to do that, doesn't it?
Psalm 41:1-3
Oh the joys of those who are kind to the poor!
The Lord rescues them when they are in trouble.
The Lord protects them and keeps them alive.
He gives them prosperity in the land and rescues them from their enemies.
The Lord nurses them when they are sick and restores them to health.
That last part really struck me. As I have been spending countless hours researching the best foods to eat, the best methods of natural healing, spending time in the kitchen cooking nutritious foods, going to different doctors to get tests performed, spending sleepless nights thinking and wondering about my health issue, constantly on my phone reading articles... this verse says those who are kind to the poor are actually nursed at their bedside by Jesus Himself!
I certainly did not include "being kind to the poor" in my prescription for better health!
Believers are not exempt from illness - we live in a fallen world. We are susceptible to sickness like everyone else! But how do we respond to it? What is different in our hearts? We should take care of ourselves and be wise in our health choices, especially about what we put into our bodies and on our bodies.
BUT if we OBSESS about saving our own lives, we are no different than the person who doesn't have the hope of heaven - who is desperate to hang on to this life because when it's over, that's the end! Our OBSESSION with health will make us useless in loving those around us and we'll literally LOSE our lives!
Isn't that the truth? All those hours I have spent worrying... my children didn't see my eyes but the back of my phone... or my back to the kitchen stove... or my back to the grocery shelves... But if I move my eyes from the storm and onto Jesus, who directs my eyes to OTHERS, Jesus promises to be WITH me. Picturing Jesus at the foot of my bed nursing me back to health, rather than the dim light of my phone googling symptoms... such a better image! PEACE! JOY! STRENGTH! HOPE!

God's prescription for healing? Keep doing the job I have set forth for you to do. Live your life! Lose your SELF by loving others. Then you will be more like ME! And trust me, He says, I'll take care of you. I'll help you by giving you the wisdom you are praying for. I'll heal you from the INSIDE out. And you won't lose your life. You'll experience soul HEALING and true LIVING! You'll experience JOY and PEACE! The world can't offer those things. But you will find those things in ME! And you will be my TESTIMONY and lead others to my peace!
